Fergus and the Shifting Sands!

One of the places we like to walk is Cocklawburn Beach. It connects to a few other beaches on the way to Lindisfarne Holy Island – Cheswick Sands and Nature Reserve and Goswick Beach. The round trip is about nine kilometres.

Depending on the weather it can be a very pleasant walk, but if there is a strong wind it can be bitterly cold. There is some shelter from the sand dunes most of the way along towards Holy Island, but when you lose the dunes the landscape becomes flat and open.

Looking inland at this point is the causeway (not visible from the beach) that people can use to cross on to the island when the tide is out. It’s also at this time when the tide is completely out, that it is possible to walk across the wide expanse of beach on to the island.

Being so open on a windy day the sands are lifted and look like a cloud under your feet. It’s quite surreal, but I’m not sure that Fergus enjoys it too much as the sand blows into our eyes, more so his, as he is lower to the ground.

But as you can see Fergus doesn’t let it interfere too much with his fun!
