When Fergus arrived we would spend a lot of time in the garden, and his morning and evening walks were around the garden. After he had had his second injection he was safe to take on longer walks. We are fortunate that where we live there is a variety of environments.
We have various beaches around the nearby coast and forests and woodlands with some great trails to explore. Fergus started on a long lead, which allowed him to explore as he walked, but gave me some control over his movements. When he became more confident and we were in areas that were quite safe and enclosed, we started doing off lead walks.
Our first woodland walk was the Woodland Trust wood at Pease Bay, where Fergus was on the long lead. The trail had some very sheer drops off the side of the path and a puppy that liked to charge about throwing caution to the wind, could end up in trouble. We later moved up to Pease Dean forest, which was much more enclosed and safe, and we started off lead walking there.
We visited the harbour around Dunbar, and also Cocklawburn Beach in Northumberland. At Dunbar, being in the town Fergus remained on the lead, getting used to all the new sights and sounds. At Cocklawburn Beach he started on the lead, but we moved to no lead quickly as it was very safe.
