Swimming in the River Tweed

During July Fergus had a play date with Lossie, a friend’s Border Collie that liked to fetch sticks -extra large ones! Another friend brought her miniature Dachshund Digby, but he was a tad small to be let loose on the river.

Lossie was well used to swimming in the river to fetch sticks on her regular walks. Fergus however had been in our paddling pool, and ventured into the burn at our forest walk, but the river Tweed was a wide, fast flowing river.

When Lossie went in to fetch her big stick, Fergus decided to go too. I was really nervous and thought if he got into difficulties, I’d have to rush in to save him. Fergus was game and managed fine in the fast water. He is strong even as a four month old puppy.

However after swimming out into deep water twice, he then decided to let Lossie go out and collect the stick and he went in as she was coming back to try and take it from her. I don’t think he was too keen on the deep river, and I was happy about his safe approach.

Fergus enjoyed his play date and the experience of swimming in the river Tweed, and later had some treats and doggie ice cream and a nap, before heading home.
