Fergus at Cocklawburn Beach near Berwick Upon Tweed

One of the beaches near where we live is Cocklawburn, which actually connects to a number of beaches on the Northumberland coast.

We begin our walk at Cocklawburn and walk south for about four and a half kilometres. As we walk there are a number of beaches separated by rocky areas that signal a new beach as we move south.

There are a few fresh water streams that flow into the sea as we walk, but at the four and a half kilometres mark there is a wide stream that is too deep to pass, unless you have high wellie boots on or the tide is far out, then it is possible to continue even further south.

I hadn’t realised at first, but the area beyond the wide stream is actually Holy Island, we had reached Lindisfarne. On some occasions we have managed to continue onto the island and walk further along into the island. It’s amazing to think that Vikings once plundered this island and its inhabitants.

The Northumberland coast is beautiful and well worth a visit. If planning a visit make sure the tide will be out, as when it is high tide there is no beach left to access.
